The payment gateway securely transmits the information to the payment processor.
The payment processor is an intermediary between the customer’s bank or card issuer and the merchant’s bank. It communicates with these financial institutions to authorize the transaction and ensure that the customer has sufficient funds or credit available. The processor also carries out security checks to detect and prevent fraudulent activities.
The payment processor notifies the merchant and commences the transfer of funds from the customer’s account to the merchant’s account after the payment is authorized. Depending on the payment mechanism, this transfer is often performed through the Automated Clearing House (ACH) or card networks such as Visa or Mastercard.
Security precautions, such as encryption, tokenization, and compliance with industry security standards, are in place throughout online payment processing to secure sensitive financial information. They ensure that consumer data is kept private and secure during the payment transaction.
For customers, online payment processing allows them to purchase from anywhere with an internet connection. For merchants, it streamlines payment workflows, improves cash flow, and reduces risks associated with handling physical cash or checks.
