Costco is one major retailer that does not accept American Express. Furthermore, some small businesses may refuse to accept American Express because it charges merchants higher fees than other major payment networks, such as Visa and Mastercard.
American Express (and Discover) are also less widely accepted outside the United States than Visa and Mastercard. However, American Express typically restricts earning grocery, streaming service, and gas rewards to merchants in the United States.
Cardholders of the American Express Blue Cash Preferred® Card, for example, can earn 6% Cash Back at US supermarkets on up to $6,000 in purchases per year (then 1%), 6% Cash Back on select US streaming subscriptions, 3% Cash Back at US gas stations and on transit (including taxis/rideshare, parking, tolls, trains, buses, and more), and 1% Cash Back on other purchases. Terms and conditions apply.
Because it costs merchants more in fees than Visa and Mastercard, American Express isn't accepted everywhere.
