The Card Verification Value 2 (CVV2) is a four-digit security code printed on the front of American Express (AMEX) credit cards. This code adds an extra layer of security to online and over-the-phone transactions, helping to ensure that the person making the purchase is a legitimate cardholder and has physical possession of the card.
The CVV2 code appears on the front of the card, just above the card number and to the right of the cardholder's name. Unlike the CVV code on Visa and Mastercard credit cards, which is a three-digit code on the back of the card, the CVV2 code on AMEX cards is on the front.
When making an online or over-the-phone purchase with an AMEX card, the merchant will ask for the CVV2 code as part of the transaction process. The cardholder enters the code into the appropriate field on the merchant's website or provides it to the merchant over the phone. The merchant then verifies the code with the card issuer to help ensure that the transaction is legitimate and authorized.
It's important to note that you should never share your code with anyone other than the authorized merchant during a transaction. If you suspect your CVV2 code has been compromised, contact your card issuer immediately to report the issue and request a new card.
